Greenberg-Ryan New Owners of The Texas Rangers

By Katrina King

Negotiations went into the early morning hours (Thursday 8/5/10) Nolan Ryan and the Ryan Group consisting of Chuck Greenberg and his ace in the hole, top backers Fort Worth's XTO Energy founder Bob Simpson and Dallas pipeline billionaire Ray Davis manage to dig deep, deeper, deepest in their pockets to pull off the purchase of the American League West leader (the Rangers) from Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban and Houston investor Jim Crane.
A Dallas bankruptcy judge approved the teams reorganization plan, which include the sale of the Rangers to Ryan-Greenberg with their promise to pay off debts owed by the Rangers to former player Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) and others who are still receiving deferred compensations. The winning bid: $593 million. Will someone please tell me where in the hell people get this can of money to play with? Did Mark Cuban really need another sports franchise to own?
Cuban said on his e-mail and blog: "All this came together in less than three weeks. It's not easy putting together $600 millions dollar deal in that period of time. Jim Crane was a great partner and we had a lot of really smart people that worked hard just to pull together what we did. But we had a limit on what we could spend."
