Mavs Training Camp Day Three

By Katrina King

University Park- SMU - The Mavs practice looks much the same as previous days before. Coach Carlise is optimistic about his big guys (centers) Alexis Ajinca (pronounced ah-lek-SEE ah-GIN-sa), Tyson Chandler, the return of Brendan Haywood and Ian Mahinmi (pronounced in english Ian or French (Yan).

Newly acquired Tyson Chandler 7-1 center from Dominguez High School in California has been traded 5 times with his last trade being to Dallas. I'll bet by NBA break, he'll be traded a 6th time. Note: In this industry, when a player has been traded many times they are referred to as NBA journeymen.

Returning for his second year with the Mavs is Brendan Haywood another 7 footer, who played better than Erick Dampier last season. Glad to see him back and Damp gone. Damp reminded me of former Maverick Center James Donaldson:) For those of you who rarely get out to the games this season, there will be fan jam on Tuesday October 5th at 7pm at the American Airlines Center (AAC) FREE!

Spoke to President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Don Nelson who is also the The Texas Legends D-League owner about his upcoming season which starts Nov.30th in Frisco, Texas. He refers to them as the "Mavericks young guns of the NBA". This team is known as one of the development league of the NBA, Mavericks version. He is very excited about the upcoming season. Hometown legend Spud Webb is President of Basketball Operations and my girl Nancy Liberman as the head coach. Nancy is the first female coach to coach an all male basketball team in history. You go girl!

Donnie is excited about the upcoming season with the Mavs, hoping the big guys will relieve some of the pressure off Dirk so he can focus on the forward position and play the center spot down the stretch if needed.

Coach Carlise seems to think that the new guys are picking up the offense fairly well.....well enough to get out and play against each other in a blue and white scrimmage game which is usually held during practice sessions. I pressured Carlise on the offensive rebounding game letting him know that this writers pet peeve is second chance points. He said he would work on offensive boards just for me this season:)

Kidd shares the same enthusiam, as always, about the new season (didn't ask him about his daughter, Cheyenne posing in lingerie...didn't think it was appropriate).
